West Elder Street, Cincinnati, Ohio

This renovation project, currently under construction, involved combining the top two floors of a historic three story building into one single residential unit while renovating the first floor commercial space. The building is a typical Cincinnati Italianate rowhouse, and the challenge was to create a modern, open plan within a very tight budget. Existing stairways were left, but almost all the interior walls were removed as well as a portion of the attic floor. New walls were only partial height to allow light to penetrate from the front and back windows. The owner wanted a very open plan, and the master suite creates different zones with partial height walls and materials for dressing, bathing, and sleeping . The public spaces such as the kitchen, dining, and living rooms flow into to one another, but again are defined by materials and ceiling volumes. A new personal elevator and private garage were also added, while maintaining the historic character of the building exterior.
